Box Score

BRONX – The Marist baseball team recorded a 9-0 road shutout of Fordham in a non-conference game on Tuesday. The Red Foxes used a 14-hit attack while four pitchers combined on a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and just one walk allowed.

Junior first baseman Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes by going 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base. Junior catcher Mark Swertfager (Katonah, N.Y.) and freshman third baseman Ben Moller (Warrington, Pa.) had two hits apiece, and sophomore second baseman Joey Aiola (Suffern, N.Y.) drove in three runs.

Freshman right-hander Sean Keenan (Dayton, N.J.) improved to 2-0 with the victory. Keenan went the first five innings. He struck out five and allowed just three hits and one walk. Junior right-hander Chris Napolitano (Wall, N.J.) retired all six batters he faced while striking out two. Senior right-hander Chris Thorsen (Lititz, Pa.) followed with a scoreless eighth, and freshman right-hander Ryan Thomas (Ringoes, N.J.) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with a strikeout.

Swertfager's two-out, two-run double in the second brought home the first runs of the game. Laurino added a two-run single in the fifth to put Marist up 4-0. Marist added a run in the sixth on an RBI single by senior shortstop Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.), and another in the seventh on a sacrifice by Aiola. The Red Foxes closed out the scoring with three in the ninth on a two-run single by Aiola and an RBI single from sophomore center fielder Graham McIntire (Concord, N.H.).

Fordham starter Kirk Haynes (0-2), who went the first four innings, took the loss. The Rams received two hits apiece from catcher Charles Galiano and freshman right fielder Mark Donadio.

Marist is now 6-14 this season; Fordham fell to 8-12.

Marist's scheduled home opener against Hofstra on Wednesday has been postponed. The Red Foxes will return to action this weekend, when they host Siena in a three-game conference series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon, followed by a single game on Sunday at noon.
