Marist Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Wofford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Marist baseball team swept a doubleheader at Wofford on Saturday, prevailing by scores of 8-3 and 3-1.

Sophomore Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) had three hits and two RBIs on the day, freshman Tyler Kirkpatrick (Eagleville, Pa.) drove in three runs, and senior Zachary Passerelle (Sparta, N.J.) and junior Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.) each scored three runs.

Game One

Marist got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the fourth, as the first four Red Foxes reached safely. Senior Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) led off with a walk, and scored on a double by Passerelle. After a single by Laurino put runners at the corners, a bunt single by Pagano made the score 2-0. Laurino later scored the third run on a groundout by junior Mark Brennan (Wallingford, Conn.).

Wofford inched closer with single runs in the fifth and sixth, but Marist pulled away with five runs in the seventh. The Red Foxes batted around, but had just one hit in the inning. They drew three walks, were hit by two pitches, and had a squeeze bunt by Brennan and a two-run double by Kirkpatrick.

Pagano was the lone Red Fox with two hits in the game. McQuail, Passerelle and Laurino scored two runs apiece.

Senior left-hander Jordan Eich (Spencerport, N.Y.) earned the win by allowing just four hits and one earned run over six innings. Eich struck out four, and is now 1-2 on the season. Junior right-hander Chris Napolitano (Wall, N.J.) closed the game with three scoreless innings, in which he struck out four, and allowed just one hit and one walk.

Conor Clancey went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Wofford. Matthew Milburn, who started and went the first 4.2 innings, took the loss and is 1-2.

Game Two

The contest was scoreless until the top of the fifth, an inning which Laurino led off with being hit by a pitch. He proceeded to steal second, advance to third on a bunt single by Pagano, and score on an infield groundout by Brennan. Marist added another run in the sixth when sophomore Joey Aiola (Suffern, N.Y.) drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a sacrifice by McQuail, and scored on a single by Laurino.

Wofford cut Marist's lead in half with a run in the sixth, but Marist added an insurance tally in the ninth. Passerelle led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a two-out single by Kirkpatrick.

Freshman right-hander Scott Boches (Featerville, Pa.) had six strikeouts and just one run allowed in 5.2 innings to get the win. Boches is now 2-0, and the Red Foxes have won all three of his starts this season. Junior right-hander Evan Davis (Little Falls, N.Y.) followed with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, which included three strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Ryan Thomas (Ringoes, N.J.) followed with a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save.

Clancey led Wofford again offensively by going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Luke Leftwich struck out 12 in six innings, but took the loss to fall to 1-1.

Marist improved to 4-9; Wofford fell to 8-6.

The wins gave Marist its first series victory of the 2014 season. The Red Foxes will try to sweep the weekend series in Sunday's finale. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
