Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Marist baseball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader at North Carolina A&T on Saturday. The Red Foxes dropped the first game 3-0, and fell 7-6 in 10 innings in the second game.
Senior shortstop Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) reached safely six times on the day, with three walks and a stolen base in game one and a three-hit, three-run performance in game two. Sophomore outfielder Graham McIntire (Concord, N.H.) went 2-for-4 in both games.
Game One
North Carolina A&T's Tyler Boone (1-5) tossed a four-hit complete game shutout. The Red Foxes' best scoring chances came in the eighth, when they had runners on second and third with one out.
Senior left-hander Jordan Eich (Spencerport, N.Y.) took the loss for Marist and fell to 2-4. Eich pitched 6.2 innings, and allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out four. Two of the three runs he allowed were unearned.
North Carolina A&T scored one run in the third, and two in the fourth. Second baseman Brandon Mitchell led the Aggies offensively by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Game Two
The Red Foxes outhit the Aggies, 13-11. McQuail was 3-for-6 with a double and three runs scored, and freshman third baseman Ben Moller (Warrington, Pa.) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. McIntire and freshman left fielder Tyler Kirkpatrick (Eagleville, Pa.) each had two hits. On the mound, freshman right-hander Scott Boches (Feasterville, Pa.) went 7.2 innings, and allowed three runs and no walks while striking out two. Boches induced 14 ground-ball outs.
The score was tied at two apiece entering the eighth, an inning in which the teams exchanged runs. After a scoreless ninth, Marist had runners on first and third with two outs in the top of the 10th. Consecutive singles by Moller, senior designated hitter Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.) and junior catcher Mark Swertfager (Katonah, N.Y.) gave the Red Foxes a 6-3 lead.
North Carolina A&T answered with four runs in the bottom of the 10th. A two-run double by catcher Stefan Jordan tied the game with one out, and an RBI single by third baseman Kyle Clary with two outs brought home Jordan with the winning run.
Kirby Whicker (2-0) picked up the win for the Aggies. Freshman right-hander Ryan Thomas (Ringoes, N.J.) took the loss for the Red Foxes and fell to 1-4.
Marist is now 8-23; North Carolina A&T is 13-22. The teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a single game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
