Marist Baseball Scores Five in Ninth, Tops North Carolina A&T

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Marist baseball team came back from deficits on three separate occasions in a 14-10 non-conference victory at North Carolina A&T in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.

The Red Foxes outhit the Aggies, 15-12. Junior Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.) went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored. Senior Zachary Passerelle (Sparta, N.J.) was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Jamari Moore (Marietta, Ga.) went 2-for-6 with three runs scored, and senior shortstop Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Senior right-hander Chris Thorsen (Lititz, Pa.) pitched the final three innings to earn the victory. Thorsen, now 1-0, allowed three hits, one run and one walk while striking out two.

After four innings, Marist trailed 5-1. The Red Foxes responded with a six-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of sophomore Joey Aiola (Suffern, N.Y.). The Aggies then scored in each of the next three innings, and a two-run seventh gave North Carolina A&T a 9-8 lead heading to the eighth. A sacrifice fly by Laurino in the top of the eighth tied the game, but North Carolina A&T took the lead back with a run in the bottom half of the frame.

Passerelle led off the ninth with a double, and advance to third on a pinch-hit bunt single by senior Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.). Freshman Ben Moller (Warrington, Pa.) had a two-run single to bring home both Passerelle and Berry, which gave the Red Foxes the lead for good. The Red Foxes also received a two-run, pinch-hit single from sophomore Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) and a sacrifice fly from McQuail in the inning.

Cameron Jergens led North Carolina A&T by going 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Kirby Whicker (2-1), the third of five North Carolina A&T pitchers, took the loss.

Marist is now 9-23; North Carolina A&T is 13-23.

Marist will return home for six straight games at McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes will be back in action on Tuesday, when they host a non-conference doubleheader against Binghamton. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m.
