Marist's Winning Streak Snapped By UMass Lowell

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist baseball team had its four-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday with an 8-5 loss to UMass Lowell in a non-conference game at McCann Baseball Field.

Three Red Foxes had two hits apiece. Senior shortstop Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a triple, sacrifice fly, two RBIs and a run scored. Senior right fielder Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Junior catcher Mark Swertfager (Katonah, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

UMass Lowell got off to a fast start with three runs in each of the first two innings. Shortstop Denny Mendick was 3-for-4 with four runs scored, designated hitter Matt Mottola was 3-for-4, and first baseman Jimmy Ricoy drove in three runs.

For Marist, freshman left-hander Dalton Mayberry (Chadds Ford, Pa.) started and took the loss in his first collegiate pitching appearance. Freshman right-hander Stephen Priolo (Voorhees, N.J.) retired all seven batters he faced in relief, which included two strikeouts.

After falling behind 6-0, Marist battled back to score once in the second, twice in the sixth and twice in the eighth. The Red Foxes were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the eighth inning.

Marist is now 12-24; UMass Lowell is 13-15.

Marist will return to action Wednesday night in the ninth annual Hudson Valley Baseball Classic against Army at Dutchess Stadium. Admission is free, and the first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WKIP (1450 AM), and can also be heard on the Red Fox Network and iHeartRadio.
