Marist Baseball Falls to Canisius, 8-1

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist baseball team suffered an 8-1 loss to Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Saturday at McCann Baseball Field.

The teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader, but following the conclusion of game one, the second game was postponed due to impending inclement weather. Canisius and Marist will now play a doubleheader on Sunday to conclude the series. A seven-inning game will begin the day at 11 a.m., and will be followed by a nine-inning second game.

Canisius outhit Marist, 9-6. Sophomore right fielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) was the only Red Fox to have a multi-hit game, as he went 2-for-4.

The Red Foxes scored their lone run in the ninth. Junior first baseman Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.) doubled to lead off the inning, and advanced to third on a flyout by freshman designated hitter Tyler Kirkpatrick (Eagleville, Pa.) and scored on a single by senior left fielder Zachary Passerelle (Sparta, N.J.).

The Golden Griffins got on the scoreboard first with four runs in the second. Canisius added three in the seventh and one in the ninth. Third baseman Connor Panas led Canisius offensively by going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Canisius starter Rohn Pierce (8-2) pitched seven shutout innings to earn the victory. He allowed three hits and two walks, and struck out two. For Marist, senior left-hander Jordan Eich (Spencerport, N.Y.), who started and went the first 6.2 innings, took the loss and fell to 2-5. Senior right-hander Chris Thorsen (Lititz, Pa.) went the final 2.1 innings, and allowed just one hit and one run.

Canisius improved to 26-14 overall and 9-4 in the MAAC; Marist fell to 12-26 overall and 5-8 in MAAC play.
