Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Marist baseball team suffered a 9-1 loss at Rider in the finale of a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series on Sunday.
Rider scored six runs in the bottom of the first, an inning in which the Broncs sent 11 hitters to the plate. Rider then added three runs in the second.
Marist scored its lone run in the sixth. With two outs and no one on base, senior left fielder Zachary Passerelle (Sparta, N.J.) singled, stole second, advanced to third on an infield error, and scored on a single by sophomore right fielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.).
Junior left-hander Rich Vrana (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) took the loss for Marist, and now stands at 0-6. Freshman right-hander Sean Keenan (Dayton, N.J.) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit while fanning three. Freshman right-hander Ryan Thomas (Ringoes, N.J.) tossed a 1-2-3 eighth with a strikeout.
Sophomore second baseman Joey Aiola (Suffern, N.Y.) had two hits for Marist.
For Rider, third baseman Nick Richter, designated hitter Giovanni Gussen and first baseman Justin Thomas had two hits apiece. Richter and left fielder James Locklear drove in two runs apiece, while Locklear and shortstop Mike Parsons scored two runs apiece. Rider starter Kyle Kennett (1-2) earned the win by going seven innings. He scattered six hits, struck out four, and didn't walk anyone.
Marist now is 8-20 overall and 2-7 in the MAAC; Rider is 8-17 overall and 3-1 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes return to action on Tuesday, when they host Albany in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
