Box Score CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Marist volleyball team opened the 2014 season with a 3-0 triumph over Holy Cross in the Boston College Invitational on Friday. The Red Foxes prevailed by scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-23.
Sophomore Devon Dawson (Frisco, Texas) and freshman Kelsey Ediger (Pearland, Texas) led the Red Foxes with eight kills apiece. Dawson hit .467, and junior Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) had seven kills and a .667 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas) totaled 28 assists, four digs, three aces, three kills and a block. Senior Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) finished with five kills, three digs and three blocks. Seniors Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.) and Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) had a team-high six digs apiece.
The Red Foxes led set one wire-to-wire, as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never led by less than five points. Late in the set, they ran off five straight points with Schlegel serving, a stretch that started with back-to-back aces.
In set two, Marist also never trailed, and gradually extended its margin as a result of scoring 14 of the set's final 20 points. The Red Foxes hit .500 as a team in the second set.
The third set included 15 ties and five lead changes, with neither team leading at any point by more than three. With the score tied at 23 apiece, a kill by Dawson, and a subsequent block by Gilbert and Dawson gave the Red Foxes the victory.
Marist will conclude play in the Boston College Invitational with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Red Foxes will face Hartford at 3:30 p.m., followed by Boston College at 7 p.m.
