POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Freshman Megan Berardelli (Ambler, Pa.) broke the program record in the 1-meter dive, as the Marist women's swimming and diving team (6-2 ,5-0) silenced the Southern Connecticut State Owls, 165-105, on Jan. 10 in McCann Natatorium.
Berardelli kicked off 2015 by racking up a personal best 283.42 points at one meter, moving 0.07 points ahead of Meghan Duffy '06 for the top score in the program's all-time history.
In the 3-meter event, senior Kimberly Tobias (San Jose, Calif.) scored 269.95 points for a first-place finish followed by Berardelli in second place (258.90 points) and junior Renata Diotalevi (Madison, Conn.) in third place (250.12 points).
Marist's freestyle competitors continued to dominate in the pool, as sophomore Meredith Wurtz (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) won the 50- (24.86 seconds) and 100-yard (53.75 seconds) events. She also anchored the 200-yard medley relay team that took first place to open the meet. Freshman Karly Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) won the 1,650-yard freestyle for the second time this season and finished just 0.03 seconds behind classmate Deirdre Connor (Nesconset, N.Y.), who won the 200-yard event.
The Red Foxes also took first place in all backstroke events with the help of freshman Georgia Goldman (Douglaston, N.Y.). Goldman completed the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.66 and raced 200 yards in 2:11.62. Sophomore Breann Lydon (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and senior captain Lindsey Squillante (New Rochelle, N.Y.) put seven more Marist points on the board, finishing second and third respectively in the 200-yard backstroke.
Marist continues its non-conference slate at 1 p.m. Jan. 17 when they face off against the Boston College Eagles.
