WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) recorded her first career double-double scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds as the Marist women's basketball team (8-6, 4-1 MAAC) were able to hold on and defeat the Monmouth Hawks (6-9, 2-4 MAAC), 63-60, Saturday afternoon.
Senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) also recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds with four blocks. It was the first instance of two Red Foxes recording a double-double in the same game since Rachele Fitz and Corielle Yarde did so against Niagara in the 2009-10 season.
Along with Jarosz and Blais, junior guard Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn) also had a strong game for the Red Foxes. Coffey recorded 14 points, added two rebounds, two steals and an assist. The Red Foxes trio accounted for all 31 of the Red Foxes 34 points in the first half. The bounce back win for the Red Foxes helped them avoid losing back to back games in the MAAC for the first time in over 10 years.
The Monmouth Hawks used some timely three point shooting to keep them in the game, seemingly answering every Marist run with a run of their own. Monmouth was led by guard Sarah Olson who hit four threes and guard Helena Kurt who hit three.
The Red Foxes would start the second half on a 6-0 run to take the lead to 40-31 but the Hawks would respond with an 11-1 run of their own to take the lead at around the 10 minute mark. From there it was back and forth between the two teams as they traded the lead three times and were tied five times in the final 10 minutes.
A layup from Jarosz with 38 seconds remaining, a defensive stop, and a split pair of free throws from freshman guard Allie Clement (Falmouth, Maine) in the final minute would be the deciding moments for the Red Foxes. Clement finished the game with eight points and four assists.
For the game the Hawks attempted 26 more shots than the Red Foxes but only shot 22-for-73 from the field and 12-for-29 from behind the three point line.
The Red Foxes fared slightly better in their shooting percentages, hitting 22-for-47 from the field and 6-for-15 from behind the arc. For the second straight game in a row the Red Foxes would give up less than five free throws to an opponent but for the first time since the Red Foxes first game against Delaware the team turned the ball over more times than their opposition.
Marist will look to start a new streak as they're back in action this Monday as they head out on the road for a MAAC game against Manhattan, tip-off is set for 11 A.M.
