HAMDEN, Conn. -- The Marist men's basketball team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Quinnipiac by a score of 66-54 on Sunday.
Senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with 18 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 39 minutes. Lewis did not commit a turnover.
Junior forward Phillip Lawrence (Baltimore, Md.) added 11 points. Freshman guard K.J. Lee (Huntington Station, N.Y.) scored five points to go along with team highs of six rebounds and four assists.
Playing his first game after missing 13 contests with a left foot injury, red-shirt sophomore guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) started and played 26 minutes. Hart scored two points, had one assist and collected one rebound in his first game action since Nov. 22.
Ousmane Drame and Ayron Hutton led Quinnipiac with 15 points apiece. Drame added a game-high 13 rebounds. Chaise Daniels had four blocked shots off the bench in just 18 minutes.
Marist shot .365 (19-for-52) for the game - .261 (6-for-23) in the first half and .448 (13-for-29) in the second half. Quinnipiac shot .423 (22-for-52) from the field, including .538 (7-for-12) from three-point range. Quinnipiac shot .750 (15-for-20) from the free-throw line, while Marist was just .545 (6-for-11).
Marist never led in the contest. Quinnipiac jumped out to a 35-19 halftime lead, and led by as much as 23 in the second half. The Red Foxes outscored the Bobcats 35-31 over the final 20 minutes, largely on the strength of going 8-for-16 from three-point range, and scored the final seven points of the game to cut the final margin to 12.
Marist is now 1-15 overall and 0-6 in MAAC play. Quinnipiac is 8-7 overall and 2-4 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes return to action on Friday, when they face Fairfield at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
Notes: Lewis has nine assists and one turnover in his last two games. He has now scored 1,772 career points. … Senior guard/forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) extended his streak of games with a three-pointer to 16. Thomas drained two threes, and finished with six points. … Lee and Hart combined for five assists and two turnovers in 49 minutes. … The home team has won all three meetings in the Marist-Quinnipiac all-time series, which began last year.
