RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) recorded her second double-double in as many games as the Marist women's basketball team (9-6, 5-1 MAAC) led wire-to-wire and defeated the Manhattan Jaspers (2-13, 1-5 MAAC), 67-45, Monday afternoon.
Jarosz finished the game with 17 points on 8-12 shooting from the field, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Junior guard Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) led the Red Foxes in scoring, totaling 24 points on 10-17 shooting, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. For Jarosz the double-double was her fourth of the year.
A 15-3 run that spanned from the eight minute mark to just under the three minute mark in the first half would give the Red Foxes some distance heading into halftime. A 13-3 run lasting six minutes in the middle of the second half would push the lead from 43-28 to 56-31 and the Red Foxes would cruise from there. Marist's largest lead of the game was 27.
For the second time this year the Red Foxes finished the game shooting 50 percent, the first time they've done so since playing mid-major power South Dakota State. As a team the Red Foxes assisted on 21 of 28 of their field goals and out rebounded Manhattan 44-36
In the first half the Red Foxes shot 13-30, 43 percent from the field, nailed five of their 13 three's and converted on two of three free throws in the first half. The Red Foxes defense also didn't yield a free throw to the Jaspers in the first half while holding Manhattan to 9-29 shooting from the field and 2-7 from behind the arc.
After not recording a single bench point in the Red Foxes last game, the bench accounted for 11 points in the first half as seven different players found their way into the scoring column.
For the game the Red Foxes bench recorded 16 points, including senior guard Maggie Gallagher's (Stormville, N.Y.) first points of the year on a three from the top of the key. The 16 bench points were a much needed boost for the starters as the Red Foxes had only recorded two bench points in their previous two games combined.
"It was a great team effort," said head coach Brian Giorgis. "We got some good help from our bench today."
Other scorers for the Red Foxes included junior guard Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) who recorded seven points and 5 rebounds, Katharine Fogarty (Peterborough, N.H) with five points and two rebounds, and freshman forward Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich.) who put up five points and grabbed four rebounds.
Sophomore guard Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) earned a career high eight assists to go along with five rebounds. Her previous career high in assists was five, which she had done five times in her career, most recently against Boston University.
For Manhattan Shayna Ericksen recorded her second double-double in a row with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Grimme recorded nine points, five rebounds and five blocks for the Jaspers but as a team the Red Foxes held Manhattan to just 18-69, 26 percent shooting.
Up next MAAC play continues as the Red Foxes head back home to take on Canisius, Friday, Jan. 6 at 7 P.M. in McCann Arena. The Red Foxes hold a 29-13 all-time record vs. the Griffins.
