POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Behind another double-double effort from senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), the Marist women's basketball team (10-6, 6-1 MAAC) defeated the Canisius Griffins (5-11, 3-4 MAAC), 74-64, Friday night at McCann Arena.
The wire-to-wire win was the Red Foxes third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) victory in a row. For Jarosz the 20 points and 12 rebounds were her third double-double in a row and fifth on the season. The three straight double-doubles marks the first time a Red Fox has recorded three consecutive since Rachele Fitz did so in the 08-09 season. 20 points from Jarosz also marks the sixth straight game a Red Fox has scored 20-plus points.
Two early fouls from Jarosz left the streak in doubt after she was limited to just two points and three rebounds in four minutes of action in the first half. Jarosz then went on to dominate in the second half recording 18 points and nine rebounds in eighteen minutes of play.
“Hopefully she learned in this game that she's more valuable on the floor than she is in foul trouble,” head coach Brian Giorgis said. “You give up two points to get 15 more minutes on the floor.”
With Jarosz sidelined with foul trouble for the first portion of the game Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) led the way for the Red Foxes with 10 first half points. For the game Coffey totaled 16 points, five rebounds and three assists in another stat sheet stuffing performance for the junior guard.
“Sydney had an outstanding game today, just all around,” Giorgis said. “She very quietly just goes about her business.”
A 17-4 run to open the second half gave the Red Foxes a 51-31 advantage, their largest lead of the game at the 13:46 minute mark but the Griffins wouldn't fold, pulling it to within ten points five times in the remaining 10 minutes. The Griffins would crack the double digit deficit once but with only 20 seconds remaining.
“Terry (Zeh) has them ready. He knows our plays almost better than we know them,” said Giorgis. “We got out to a big lead but they always come clawing back.”
In a night of record setting performances junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) had one of her own as she recorded a career high six blocks and cracked the record book for blocks in a game, tying Erica Allenspach for fourth all-time. To go along with the blocks, Blais recorded 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a steal.
For the game the Red Foxes would block 10 total shots as a team, shoot 26-for-59, 44 percent from the field, 7-for-17 from three point range and knock down 15 of their 20 free throws, good for 75 percent.
For the second game in a row the Red Foxes out rebound their opponent, this time grabbing 46 boards to the Griffins 35. In total nine different Red Foxes found the scoring column and after only recording two points in two games combined against Fairfield and Monmouth, the Red Foxes bench came out with another strong performance, holding a 17-2 scoring advantage over Canisius.
Tonight was the second game in a row where we got production from our bench,” Giorgis said. “We need to continue that.”
MAAC play continues as the Red Foxes takes on Siena looking for their second win against the Saints this year, Sunday, Jan. 18 at 12 P.M. in McCann Arena. The Red Foxes fought back from a large first half deficit against Siena the first time around but will look to get off to a quicker start at home.
“We have a tough game against Siena on Sunday,” Giorgis said. “Hopefully we get a great crowd again and that it's a real barnburner.”
