POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 72-71 loss to Quinnipiac in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at McCann Arena on Sunday afternoon.
With 16 seconds to play, Quinnipiac's Zaid Hearst drained a jump shot to put the Bobcats up 72-70. On the Red Foxes' final possession, red-shirt sophomore guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) tried an acrobatic layup that missed. Junior center Eric Truog (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) was unable to convert a tip-in, but got the rebound. As the tenths of the final second ticked off the clock, Truog attempted another shot. He was fouled, and the Red Foxes originally contended that his shot was goaltended. After a thorough instant replay review, it was confirmed that Truog was fouled with one-tenth of a second left.
With Marist being in the double bonus, Truog went to the line for two shots. His first missed. Trying to miss the second one intentionally so the Red Foxes could get a tying tip-in, Truog's second free throw banked in. Quinnipiac then inbounded the ball without incident to secure the one-point victory.
Marist led for 32:59 of the game, as Quinnipiac did not take its first lead until a basket by Hearst with 5:06 to play. In the final 5:06, the Red Foxes tied the score twice – on a three-pointer by senior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 2:39 to play, and a driving layup by Hart with 1:19 left. However, Marist was unable to re-claim the lead at any point.
For Marist, senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with 20 points and six rebounds, followed by Hart with 19. Curry had nine on the strength of three three-pointers, and freshman guard K.J. Lee (Huntington Station, N.Y.) had eight points in 17 minutes off the bench. Truog finished with seven points, five rebounds, three assists, a blocked shot and a steal with no turnovers.
For Quinnipiac, Hearst led all scorers with 27 points. He scored the Bobcats' last six points over the final 3:13. Ousmane Drame finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, a blocked shot and a steal, and Samuel Dingba added 10 rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench. The Bobcats outrebounded the Red Foxes by a count of 44-24. Marist committed just eight turnovers, its second straight game with less than 10.
Marist is now 1-17 overall and 0-8 in MAAC play. Quinnipiac is 9-8 overall and 3-5 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes will return to action on Friday against Siena at the Times Union Center in Albany in a game which will be carried on ESPN3. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
