ALBANY, N.Y. - The Marist men's basketball team to lost Siena, 69-60, in the 75th meeting between the Route 9 rivals Friday at the Times Union Center.
Senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) led Marist in all stat categories with 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Defensively, he had two blocks and tied a career high with five steals.
"We didn't have the rhythm that we needed offensively and I thought we were soft on the interior defensively," head coach Mike Maker said.
Two more Red Foxes scored in double figures, as senior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted 14 points on 4-for-6 shooting from three-point range. Sophomore guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) scored 11 points.
Siena senior guard Rob Poole led all scorers with 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. In the Saints' backcourt, sophomore guard Marquis Wright finished with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists.
A dunk by junior forward Phillip Lawrence (Baltimore, Md.) gave Marist a 4-2 advantage and the Red Foxes led for the next six minutes of the first half. Seven ties and six lead changes followed with neither team leading by more than three points. A pair of free throws by Wright tied the score at 28 at the half.
Siena opened the second half with a 13-5 run that was capped by a pair of Poole threes. Marist countered with four consecutive three pointers, including two from senior guard/forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.), to cut the deficit to six points with 40 seconds remaining. Marist's comeback fell short, however.
The Saints went 7-for-12 (58 percent) from behind the arc, while the Red Foxes shot 10-for-29 (35 percent). Marist shot 20-for-59 overall to Siena's mark of 21-for-46 (46 percent) overall.
Marist is now 1-18 overall and 0-9 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Siena improved to 8-10 overall and 5-4 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes will host Fairfield on Jan. 25 at 2 p.m.
