POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team (12-7, 8-2 MAAC) led wire-to-wire as they defeated the Saint Peter's Peacocks (1-17, 1-8 MAAC), 77-51, Saturday night at McCann Arena.

The Red Foxes jumped out to an early lead and never looked back using a 17-4 run to start the half and 16-3 run to close it. Back to back and-ones on driving layups by juniors, Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn) and Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) sparked the 16-3 run that lasted from just under the seven minute mark to the :38 seconds mark in the first half.

Blais would finish with a game high 19 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two assists. Blais did most of her damage in the first half, totaled 15 points and found herself cheering from the bench in the second half. Coffey would finish with seven points, four rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes of action.

“We haven't had a good first half in a while so this was really refreshing,” Blais said. “Having good shooting percentages and defensively doing the things we like to do at Marist.”

Freshman guard Allie Clement (Falmouth, Maine) returned to the starting lineup after coming off the bench against Quinnipiac and tied a career high in points with 13 on 6-7 shooting and added three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

“After the Quinnipiac game we had a decision to make,” Clement said. “Tonight was a statement game on how we we're going to respond to a loss.”

Senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) also played a big part in the bounce back win recording 16 points and a team high eight rebounds in only 18 minutes of play.

“We challenged our kids and asked them which team was going to show up,” head coach Brian Giorgis said. “Was it going to be the team that was tentative and over did the scout or was it the one that was going to play Marist basketball?"

Clearly it was the latter as the Red Foxes blitzed the Peacocks from the jump, showing some high half court pressure and overall tenacious defense. The defensive side of the ball propelled the Red Foxes to a 47 point quarter while holding Saint Peter's to only 21 points on 9-36 (.250) shooting and six turnovers.

For the game the Red Foxes finished shooting 29-61 (.475) from the field, 9-20 (.450) from deep and 10-15 (.667) from the free throw line. The Red Foxes also assisted on 22 of their 29 made field goals and recorded 11 team blocks.

“We executed offensively extremely well,” Giorgis said. “I usually can find something wrong but today was as good of an effort as we have had.”

For the Peacock's forward Sajanna Bethea led the way with a 14 point, 12 rebound double-double and guard Talah Hughes tallied nine points, seven rebounds and two steals.

“To their credit they are extremely well coached, just extremely young, they're going to be good,” Giorgis remarked.

Up next the Red Foxes take on the Manhattan Jaspers for the second time this year on Thursday, Jan. 29, tip-off is set for 7 P.M. The Red Foxes emerged as road victors last time against the Jaspers leaving Draddy Gymnasium with a 67-45 win.
