POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist men's basketball team earned a 73-67 victory over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Fairfield at McCann Arena on Sunday.
Senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) led all scorers with 26 points. Lewis added four rebounds and one assist as he set career highs for free throws made (12) and attempted (17). Red-shirt sophomore guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) finished with 17 points, and also set career highs for free throws made (12) and attempted (13).
Senior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 11 points and four assists, and went 6-for-6 from the line. Junior center Eric Truog (Chagrin Falls, N.Y.), who returned to the lineup after missing one game with a back injury, had a career-high five steals to go along with 11 rebounds, four points and two assists.
Marcus Gilbert led Fairfield with 20 points, and Mike Kirkland scored 13 to go along with seven rebounds, which tied Coleman Johnson for the team lead.
The first half included three lead changes and four ties. Fairfield's largest lead was nine, at 21-12 with 8:18 left in the half. However, the Red Foxes answered with nine consecutive points, which included back-to-back three-pointers by freshman guard K.J. Lee (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and Lewis, to tie the score at 21 apiece. Jerome Segura scored Fairfield's final five points of the half, including a jumper with 41 seconds to play, to give the Stags a 26-25 lead after the first 20 minutes.
On the first possession of the second half, Marist junior forward Phillip Lawrence (Baltimore, Md.) was fouled shooting a three-pointer. He converted all three of his free throws to put the Red Foxes up 28-26, and Marist never surrendered the lead the rest of the way. The Red Foxes were 29-for-34 from the free-throw line in the second half, and hit their final nine attempts from the line over the last 1:33.
For the game, Marist shot .357 (15-for-42) from the field, .333 (6-for-18) from three-point range, and .841 (37-for-44) from the free-throw line. Fairfield was .418 (23-for-55) from the field, .389 (7-for-18) from three-point range and .778 (14-for-18) from the line. Fairfield held a 32-31 edge in rebounds, but Marist forced 14 turnovers while committing just 11.
Fairfield is now 6-14 overall and 4-6 in the MAAC. Marist is 2-18 overall and 1-9 in the MAAC.
Marist returns to action on Friday, when the Red Foxes travel to western New York to face Niagara for the first time this season. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., and the contest will be carried by ESPN3.
