LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Senior guard Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) led the way for the Red Foxes scoring 23 points, 16 of which came in the first half, as the Marist women's basketball team (7-5, 3-0 MAAC) downed the Siena Saints (7-5, 0-3 MAAC), 56-46 Friday night at the Alumni Recreation Center.
Sparked by a late sequence from junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.), scoring her first points on back to back three pointers and a layup from freshman guard Allie Clement (Falmouth, Maine), the Red Foxes knotted the score at 43 with seven minutes remaining and never looked back.
Another Blais three pointer moments later would give the Red Foxes a 46-43 lead with six minutes remaining, the team's first lead since the nineteen minute mark in the first half when they led 2-0. The Red Foxes would end the game on a 25-5 run over the final nine minutes.
The Red Foxes shot 20-50 from the field for 40 percent, 11-30 from three point range for 37 percent and shot only six free throws, converting on five of them. Coffey would be the only member of the Red Foxes to score in double digits.
Blais finished the game with nine points, all coming in the second half, and six rebounds to go along with two blocks an assist and a steal. Senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Clement recorded nine points and four assists in 24 minutes of action. The Red Foxes recorded 17 points off of 13 Siena turnovers.
In the first half the Red Foxes found themselves on the wrong end of some cold shooting after a twelve day layoff, the third longest break under head coach Brian Giorgis' tenure. The Saints jumped on the Red Foxes early and often from inside and outside.
A 16-6 run for the Red Foxes to end the half would swing a 14 point 20-6 deficit to only two points by halftime. Keeping the team afloat, Coffey led the way with 16 points and five rebounds. 12 of Coffey's 16 first half points came from three point range as she shot 6-of-7 from the field and 4-for-5 from deep. The Saints outrebound the Red Foxes 23-14 in the half. Marist would force nine Siena turnovers in the half to seven turnovers for the Red Foxes.
Only two other Red Foxes would score in the half, Clement would tack on five points, a rebound and three assists while Jarosz added three points and two rebounds.
MAAC play continues as the Red Foxes host Fairfield on Tuesday, Jan. 6. Tip-off is set for 7 P.M. at McCann Arena. The Red Foxes are 26-16 all-time vs the Stags.
