NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Marist women's basketball team (14-7, 10-2 MAAC) won their third straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game as they defeated the Iona Gaels (11-10, 8-4 MAAC), 63-58, on Saturday afternoon at the Hynes Center.
Junior guard Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) caught fire late, after some early foul troubled limited her in the first half, as the Red Foxes distanced themselves in the final five minutes to pull out a strong road victory. Blais scored 11 of the team's final 13 points and finished with 13 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
The Red Foxes also held the Gaels scoreless from the 6:33 minute mark to 1:02 remaining in the second half, a stretch that included three blocks and two steals. As a team the Red Foxes finished with eight team blocks and seven steals, forcing Iona into 17 turnovers, eight in the second half.
Senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y) paced the Red Foxes in the first half with 12 points and ended the game with 20 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Junior guard Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.), who also had a strong first half outing both offensively and defensively, recorded eight points and six rebounds.
Sophomore guard Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) finished the game as the Red Foxes third scorer in double digits with 12 points, four assists and two steals including a big jumper in the final minutes that pushed the Red Foxes lead to nine, their largest of the game. The Red Foxes are 10-1 when the team has three scorers in double digits. Lai's 12 points accounted for all but two of the Red Foxes bench scoring total.
The back and forth second half saw the score tied four times and the lead change eight times as both teams traded buckets until the Red Foxes final scoring flurry.
For the Gaels, forward Joy Adams had an outstanding game recording 23 points and 24 rebounds, her second highest rebounding total of the year. The MAAC's leading scorer Damika Martinez, limited by two early fouls, finished the game with 19 points on 19 shots.
Up next the Red Foxes set out on their Buffalo trip to take on Canisius and Niagara. The Red Foxes take on the Purple Eagles first on Thursday, Feb. 5th and then conclude the trip against the Griffins on Saturday, Feb. 7th.
