POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women's basketball team (7-6, 3-1 MAAC) winners of their previous six straight fell to the Fairfield Stags (3-10, 2-2 MAAC), 56-55, Tuesday night at McCann Arena. In a game that saw the lead change ten times throughout and numerous times in the last minute alone, Fairfield came away with their second win in as many tries against the Red Foxes both on the road in an arena not usually friendly to the opposition.

With 3.2 seconds remaining the Red Foxes were tasked with moving the ball from the opposite baseline in order to win the game. An almost perfect inbounds play saw junior guard Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) get off a contested layup with no time left on the clock, the shot rimmed out and the Stags left victorious.

Coffey would finish the game recording 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal but was limited with two early fouls and only played 25 total minutes.

Redshirt senior center Tori Jarosz had another strong game for the Red Foxes, just missing her third double-double of the year. Jarosz finished with 20 points on 9-14 shooting, nine rebounds and two blocked shots.

Junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) was also one rebound shy of a double-double but struggled to find her touch in the early going. Blais finished with 16 points on 6-18 shooting, 2-7 from deep, and added nine rebound, two blocks and a steal.

“They knew I was a shooter, Fairfield scouts really well,” said Blais. “They played tight up top so my only option was to go around them, just tonight I wasn't hitting them.”

The Red Foxes finished the game with 30 points in the paint and 17 points off 12 forced turnovers but were done in by an efficient first half and some clutch end game shooting from the Stags. In the first half Fairfield shot 14-31 from the field to the Red Foxes 11-27 and went into halftime leading 29-24.

The Red Foxes would outscore the Stags 31-27 in the second half but in the end it wouldn't be enough to earn a seventh straight victory and fourth straight in the MAAC.

“That was a typical Marist-Fairfield game at home,” head coach Brian Giorgis said. “It came down to the last plays, unfortunately we couldn't get stops when we needed stops.”

For the game the Red Foxes would shoot 22-53, 41 percent from the field but only 3-15 from three point range. Marist went to the stripe nine more times than Fairfield, converting on nine of their 11 attempts.

MAAC play continues as the Red Foxes head out on the road to take on Monmouth, Saturday Jan. 10 Tip-off is set for 2 P.M. The Red Foxes are 16-18 all-time vs the Hawks.
