POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's basketball team dropped a 67-52 contest to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Canisius on Jan. 8 in McCann Arena.
Senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) had game highs with 19 points and six assists.  Lewis, who played all 40 minutes, added six assists and three steals while committing just one turnover.
Senior guard/forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with 13 points and three assists. Thomas shot 5-for-9 from the field and 3-for-7 from three-point range. Junior center Eric Truog (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) had a team-high eight rebounds to go along with four points, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
Jeremiah Williams led the Golden Griffins, scoring 17 points and dishing out five assists off the bench. Josiah Heath had a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, and Zach Lewis added 12 points.
The game had five lead changes and nine ties. Neither team led by more than five points in the first half. A three-pointer by Lewis with 16 seconds left in the first half brought the Red Foxes to within one at 30-29 at halftime.
With 17:19 to play, a jumper by Lewis gave the Red Foxes a 36-34 lead. Canisius answered by scoring the next five points to take the lead for good.
The Golden Griffins ran their lead to 11, but a basket by Lewis with 4:47 to play brought Marist to within 58-52. However, those were the last points the Red Foxes scored in the contest, as Canisius closed the game on a 9-0 run.
Marist shot .375 (21-for-56) from the field, while Canisius shot .500 (23-for-46). The Golden Griffins were 16-for-21 from the free-throw line, while Marist was just 2-for-4.
Marist is now 1-14 overall and 0-5 in the MAAC. Canisius improved to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes will travel to Quinnipiac on Jan. 11 for a 3 p.m. contest. It will be the first of two meetings in eight days with the Bobcats.
Notes: Marist did not dress red-shirt sophomore guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.), senior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman guard K.J. Lee (Huntington Station, N.Y.). Hart remains out with a foot injury, Curry remains out with a hand injury, and Lee was sidelined due to illness. In Lee's place, senior guard Tourron Whitfield (Queens, N.Y.) made his first career start. Whitfield played a career-high 10 minutes. … Lewis' six assists were the highest single-game total by a Red Fox this season. … Lewis played all 40 minutes for the first time this season. ... Thomas has hit a three-pointer in all 15 of Marist's games this season. … Marist's 12 turnovers were its lowest total in the last 10 games, and third-lowest total in a game this season.  Â
