POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist volleyball team (12-6, 5-2 MAAC) took down Quinnipiac in three straight sets Oct. 10 in McCann Arena. The Red Foxes dominated the opening frame, 25-14, fought for a 33-31 win in the second set, and finished off the Bobcats 25-19.
Senior Kelsey Lahey slammed 13 kills while junior Lexi Millington posted a match-high 15 digs. Marist owned an 11-3 edge in service aces, which included a career-high five for junior Liz Gassman.
The Red Foxes began the match red hot, scoring the first 10 points. Marist stretched its lead to as much as 14 points after going on an 11-3 run later in the first frame.
The second set was the Red Foxes' longest of the season, featuring 18 ties and 10 lead changes. With the Bobcats in front 18-16, Marist erupted for six straight points by forcing a few attack errors. A pair of Lahey kills and a Quinnipiac setting error finally gave Marist a 2-0 edge in the contest.
Mistakes on Marist's side of the net put Quinnipiac up 15-10 in the final set, but the Red Foxes charged out of a timeout to score 15 of the final 19 points for their fourth straight win. Four kills by Lahey and three more from junior Amanda Bradley highlighted the final run.
Quinnipiac sophomore Elizabeth Kloos jumped for five total blocks while freshman Kat Miller chipped in 17 assists. The Bobcats tallied 35 digs and six blocks as a team.
Marist will host Fairfield in its Dig Pink match at 1 p.m. Oct. 11 in McCann Arena. Prior to the contest there will be a Hudson Valley Drip and Sip painting class at 11 a.m. in the Dance Studio to benefit the Miles of Hope Foundation. The cost is $35 payable by cash or check and includes the class and a donation to the organization. Marist will wear pink jerseys during the match to raise breast cancer awareness.
