HAMDEN, Connecticut - In a midweek Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup, the Marist volleyball team (13-7, 6-3 MAAC) took down Quinnipiac, 3-1.
It was the second time in four days the Red Foxes beat the Bobcats. Marist won the first two sets 25-23 and 25-18, respectively. The Red Foxes rebounded from a 25-18 third set loss and took the match with a 25-13 victory in the fourth frame.
Sophomore Ashton Korona posted a career-high 10 kills and jumped for three blocks in the victory. Freshman Taylor Van Der Biezen chipped in four of Marist's 13 service aces. On the defensive end, junior Lexi Millington sprawled for a match-high 21 digs.
The score was tied 13 times in the opening set, including as late as 22, and neither side led by more than three points. A Korona kill eventually ended the frame.
Marist answered a 4-0 run from Quinnipiac with five straight points of their own in the following set to put them up 11-10. Though the score was tied four more times, the Red Foxes earned the final five points with the help of two kills from junior Amanda Bradley.
The tides turned in the Bobcats' favor in the the third set, as they took an early five-point lead and never looked back. The score was tied at four in the final set, but five Quinnipiac attack errors and six service aces later and the Red Foxes a big enough cushion on the way to their sixth MAAC victory.
The Bobcats stayed in the contest with the help of freshman Kat Miller, who led them in three different categories. She posted eight digs, five blocks and 28 assists on the night.
Marist had a 55-38 edge in kills and hit .339 to Quinnipiac's mark of .220 in the match.
The Red Foxes will face off against Siena in a rematch of last year's MAAC Championship final. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. Oct. 17.
