LOUDONVILLE, New York - The Marist volleyball team fell to Siena in four sets on Oct. 17. The Saints took the first two sets 27-25, then the Red Foxes kept the match going with a 25-18 win in the third set. The fourth set ended 25-19.
Sophomore Kelsey Ediger posted a double-double in the first two sets and ended the match with 19 kills and 21 digs. Junior Lexi Millington racked up match highs with 23 digs and three service aces.
The first two frames were tied 22 times, but there were just seven lead changes. Three straight Saints points ended a back and forth first set where neither side earned more than four consecutive points. A 5-1 run in second set put Marist up 9-8 and the Red Foxes tied the score twice more down the stretch, but three straight kills from junior Briana Flagg maintained Siena's edge in the match.
Marist earned the serve back to begin the third set and charged out to an 8-1 lead with the help of a pair of Millington service aces. The Red Foxes led by as many as nine points before picking up a 25-18 win. Marist had a one-point lead haflway through the final frame, but five straight Siena points in the midst of a timeout would be all the Saints would need for its seventh MAAC win of the year.
Both sides were even with 82 total digs, but Marist had a 66-58 edge in kills. Siena hit .268 and got 21 kills from Flagg on the attack. Junior Kalehua Katagiri chipped in a match-best 28 digs.
The Red Foxes will return home for a pair of weekend matches against Saint Peter's and Rider on Oct. 24 and 25, respectively. Both contests are slated for 1 p.m.
