LOUDONVILLE, New York – The Marist women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 road defeat against the Siena Saints Wednesday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action.
Tara Sobierajski scored the game winning goal in the 24th minute for the Saints after a bending corner kick found its way through traffic and into the back of the net. Siena held an 8-0 edge in shots after the first half and Marist goalkeeper Makala Foley made all three of her saves in the period.
The Red Foxes were able to mount more of an attack in the second half tallying six shots, four of which were on net, but were unable to crack the Saints back line and goalkeeper Liz Rogan for an equalizer.
Marist mounted two chances in the final 10 minutes of regulation but shots from Hope Quinonez, in the 82nd minute, and Kathleen Moore, in the 85th minute, were thwarted by the Siena keeper.
For Marist, Quinonez, Moore, and Kerri McGinley each had two shots. Meghan Riccardi had four shots and Allison Clark had three shots for Siena.
Today's match was the Red Foxes first loss in four conference games and the group's first conference loss in the month of October. The team will look to start a new streak with just two games remaining in the regular season as they host Manhattan on Saturday, October 24. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the team will be holding their annual pink-out to support the Miles of Hope foundation and breast cancer awareness.
The Red Foxes need just one point in one of their remaining two games (Manhattan, Niagara) to clinch a spot in the MAAC Championships but can also secure a berth with losses and/or ties by Quinnipiac and Canisius.
