POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - After losing the first set, the Marist volleyball team earned a 3-1 comeback victory against Rider, the first place team in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, on Oct. 25 in McCann Arena.
The Broncs won the first set, 25-21, but the Red Foxes finished off the match with wins of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-16. With a 15-8 overall record and 8-4 mark in MAAC play, the Red Foxes sit in third place and one game behind the Broncs in the conference standings.
Junior Amanda Schlegel became just the seventh player in program history to reach 2,000 career assists when she picked up her 28th assist of the match in the third set. She finished the match with 42 alongside seven digs. Sophomore Kelsey Ediger slammed 19 kills while junior Lexi Millington chipped in 18 digs on the defensive side.
A string of six straight points put Marist on top 8-5 in the opening frame, which featured five ties. Rider would even the score at 18 and grab an early 1-0 lead, however.
In the second set Marist was down by three points but once again ripped off a 6-1 run with freshman Melanie Snyder serving. The Red Foxes scored six of the last eight points of the frame with the help of two kills by Ediger to tie the match at one.
Marist never trailed in the final two sets. Four kills from Ediger and three more from Schlegel in the fourth helped the Red Foxes remain in control of the contest.
The Red Foxes owned a 50-36 edge in assists and had eight service aces, including three from Millington. Rider totaled 61 digs but trailed the Red Foxes .490 to .610 in sideout percentage.
Broncs sophomore Veronica Koval racked up 17 digs while senior Brandie Hill had 17 assists, both of which were team highs.
