POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist women's soccer team finished the 2015 regular seaon with a 7-10-2 overall record after taking down Niagara, 1-0, on a rainy Oct. 28 afternoon in Tenney Stadium.
With a mark of 6-3-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, the Red Foxes await the results of two more contests to determine their seed, opponent and venue for the first round of the MAAC Championships on Oct. 31.
Freshman Hope Quinonez corralled a pass from junior Ashlee Burke at the top of the box, then hit the back of the net from eight yards out in the 35th minute.
The Purple Eagles' first two shots of the second half were blocked by the sitngy Marist defense 11 seconds apart. Two headers by Niagara later in the half missed the net and the Red Foxes blanked an opponent for the second straight match.
Sophomore Makala Foley made three saves and picked up her fifth win and fourth shutout of the season. Marist freshman Kerri McGinley had three shots, as did Niagara junior Shawnique Samuels and senior Jami Petersen.
While each side registered three shots on goal, Niagara (8-7-2, 6-4-0 MAAC) owned a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Marist would clinch the no. 2 seed with a Rider loss and a win or tie from Manhattan. The Jaspers are currently underway against Iona while the Broncs will play at Canisius at 4 p.m.
(UPDATE, 6:45 p.m. Wednesday: Marist is the #3 seed in the championships, and will face #6 Siena on Saturday at Tenney Stadium. Game time TBA.)
