BUFFALO, New York - The Marist volleyball team picked up its third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory of the season by defeating Canisius, 3-1, on Oct. 3. The Red Foxes lost the opening set, 25-22, before charging back with scores of 25-10, 25-19, and 25-21.

Senior Kelsey Lahey posted a career-high four service aces and led Marist with 13 kills in the win. Junior Lexi Millington chipped in 22 digs while classmate Amanda Schlegel had 30 assists.

There were nine ties and six lead changes in the opening frame, but the Golden Griffins ended on a 6-2 run highlighted by three service aces. Marist quickly turned the tide with an 11-3 scoring spree to begin the following set. Five straight kills from the Red Foxes with Schlegel serving helped increase the lead to as much as 15.

Neither side trailed by more than five until the final point of a much closer third frame. A .640 sideout percentage in the set propelled the Red Foxes and a Lahey service ace gave them a 2-1 edge. The Griffins took the lead four times in the fourth set, but they did not come back after tying the score at 18. A 7-3 run that included three kills from junior Liz Gassman gave Marist the match.

Gassman also led the Red Foxes with three total blocks. Marist had a 58-29 advantage in assists and hit .289.

Canisius had seven blocks as a team but finished with a .089 attack percentage on the offensive end. Senior Grace Streicher registered team-highs with four blocks and 24 assists.

The Red Foxes bring a 10-6 overall record into their contest at Niagara. They will play the Purple Eagles at 1 p.m. Oct. 4.
