NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, New York - With a four set victory at Niagara on Oct. 4, the Marist volleyball team moved to 11-6 overall and 4-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. The Red Foxes lost the first set, 25-14, but fought back with wins of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-20.
Senior Courtney Shaw hit .367 and led the Marist attack with 15 kills. Sophomore Kelsey Ediger posted a career-high 20 digs and senior Kelsey Lahey slammed four of her 12 kills in the third set of the match.
The Purple Eagles owned all the momentum in the first set, winning by 11. A string of six straight points with Lahey serving gave Marist a 14-9 edge in the second set and it held the lead throughout the frame.
Marist opened the third set serving and held the lead with the help of kills from five different players. Niagara jumped in front, 19-15, but the Red Foxes ripped off a 10-4 run coming out of a timeout to give them the two-point advantage needed to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Half of the matches ties' came in the final set with neither side having a scoring spree exceeding four points. Two kills from Shaw forced a Purple Eagles' timeout with the Red Foxes up 13-10 and Marist grinded out their fifth win in their last six matches.
Niagara sophomore Nicole Matheis posted team highs with 18 digs and a service ace while junior Alex Stone jumped for a game-high seven total blocks for the Purple Eagles. The Red Foxes had a 50-38 edge in assists.
Marist will host Quinnipiac and Fairfield in McCann Arena on Oct. 10 and 11, respectively. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
