POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday with a 73-63 triumph over Dartmouth at McCann Arena.
Red-shirt junior guard Khallid Hart led all scorers with 27 points. Hart shot 5-for-9 from the field, 3-for-5 from three-point range and 14-for-16 from the free-throw line. He added eight rebounds, two assists and a steal. Freshman guard/forward Isaiah Lamb came off the bench and scored 15 points, going 5-for-9 from the field, 2-for-3 from three and 3-for-4 from the line. A pair of Red Foxes – sophomore guard K.J. Lee and senior forward Phillip Lawrence-Ricks – added nine points apiece off the bench. Lee shot 4-for-4 in 17 minutes.
For the second straight game, Marist got off to a slow start. The Red Foxes scored just five points in the first 5:26, and trailed by as many as eight. Marist followed with an 11-4 run, which included threes by Hart, Lawrence-Ricks and Lee, to cut its deficit to one. With 6:50 left in the first half, a three-pointer by Lamb put Marist up 23-20, and gave the Red Foxes the lead for good. The basket started an 11-0 run for the Red Foxes, who led 33-24 at halftime.
Dartmouth scored the first seven points of the second half to cut its deficit to two, but Lamb came off the bench to hit a jumper at the 16:38 mark, which put Marist back up by four. On eight separate occasions in the first 10:05 of the second half, Dartmouth climbed to within two, but the Big Green never tied the game at any point in the final 20 minutes. A 10-2 run over a span of 1:55, which started with a three-pointer by Lamb, gave Marist a 57-47 lead with 7:40 left. Dartmouth never got closer than within five the rest of the way.
For the game, Marist shot .500 (22-for-44) from the field, .435 (10-for-23) from three-point range and .731 (19-for-26) from the free-throw line. Marist shot .526/.500/.762 in the second half.
Evan Boudreaux led Dartmouth 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Tommy Carpenter added 10 points off the bench. Malik Gill finished with six points, six assists, five steals and two rebounds. The Red Foxes held the Big Green to .339 (21-for-62) shooting from the field and a .158 clip (3-for-19) from three-point range.
Marist is now 1-1; Dartmouth is 0-2.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, when they travel to play Kent State of the Mid-American Conference for the first time in program history. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
Notes: Hart's 14 free throws made and 16 free throws attempted were both career highs. Hart drained his first 13 attempts of the game. … The Red Foxes were plus-19 in Lamb's 25 minutes on the floor. … Junior center Kentrall Brooks came off the bench and had three points, two rebounds and three blocked shots in 12 minutes. The blocked shots tied a career high. … The Marist bench, which scored just 10 of the team's 64 points on opening day, had 36 of the team's 73 points on Tuesday.
