QUEENS, New York – The Marist women's basketball team fell to the St. John's Red Storm, 61-47, Sunday night in Carnesecca Arena. With the loss the Red Foxes move to 0-4 on the season as St. John's moves to 3-1.
Sydney Coffey, who was aggressive throughout, stuffed the stat sheet on offense and defense and finished with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Tori Jarosz finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds, her second double-double of the season, but early foul trouble plagued her all game and held her to 28 minutes of action.
Cold shooting was the story of the game for the Red Foxes, as the team managed just 1-for-12 shooting from three point range in the first half and finished the game 4-for-23 overall from deep.
Clement recorded the team's first and only three in the first half with under two minutes remaining. Up to that point the Red Foxes had 14 of their points inside the paint and the other seven from trips to the free throw line.
Overall in the first half the Red Foxes shot 8-for-27 (.296) from the field and headed to the locker room down just 10 to the Red Storm. St. John's finished the half 14-for-31 (.452) from the field and went 0-for-6 from behind the arc.
Clement then connected again to start the second half as it looked as if the Red Foxes would enter the new half with some energy and confidence. It wasn't to be as St. John's upped the full-court pressure, forced some turnovers, and held Marist at bay for the remainder of the game.
The Red Foxes did however out-rebound their opposition for the first time this season, holding the edge on the boards 40-38 while pulling down 10 offensive rebounds. On the flip side, Marist trailed in the turnover category, 18-11.
The Red Storm's balanced effort saw three of their players finish the game in double figures as Aliyyah Handford scored 19 points, Danaejah Grant scored 17, and Jade Walker finished with 13.
Up next the Red Foxes head to the Gulf Coast Showcase for a three game tournament in Estero, Florida. First up is nationally ranked Louisville on Friday, November 27th. Tip for the Red Foxes first game in Florida is scheduled for 5 p.m.
