POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist volleyball team got hot late and swept Niagara, 3-0, on Nov. 7 in McCann Arena to clinch a berth in the 2015 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships. The Red Foxes pulled away with set scores of 25-18, 26-24, and 25-15 to improve to 18-9 overall and 11-5 against MAAC opponents.
Sophomore Kelsey Ediger was one of five Red Foxes to tally double-digit digs (14) in a strong defensive effort and she slammed a match-high 11 kills. Another double-double came from junior Amanda Schlegel, who racked up 39 assists and 10 digs alongside a pair of service aces.
Marist was down by five points three times in the opening set, but went on a 15-5 tear highlighted by three kills from senior Kelsey Lahey. The Purple Eagles rebounded to go up 10-5 in the second frame, but the Red Foxes chipped away out of a timeout to earn nine of the next 15 points and cut the deficit to one. A pair of Niagara attack errors and Marist kills ended the set and gave the Red Foxes a 2-0 edge.
Though the Purple Eagles tied the score three times early in the final set, seven straight points with Schlegel serving gave Marist enough of a cushion to earn a spot in the postseason conference tournament.
The Red Foxes rebounded from a slow start to collect 45 kills. On the defensive end they finished with 72 digs, including 20 from junior Lexi Millington. Marist owned a 68 percent to 51 percent edge in sideout.
Niagara finished the contest with eight blocks after getting 3.5 from redshirt junior Taylor Edmonds in front. The Purple Eagles hit just .073 on the attack however.
Marist has two regular season games remaining and will host Canisius at 1 p.m. Nov. 8. The MAAC Championships will be held from Nov. 20-22 on the campus of Siena College in Loudonville, New York.
