WEST POINT, New York – The Marist men's basketball team established a season high for points scored in an 89-83 triumph at Army West Point on Sunday.
Freshman guard Brian Parker had the team's first double-double of the season with a team-high 23 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Red-shirt junior guard Khallid Hart scored 22, and freshman guard/forward Isaiah Lamb contributed 14.
Army's Tanner Plomb led all scorers with 27 points, but was held to 3-for-11 shooting from three-point range. Dylan Cox had 16 points and a game-high six assists. Kevin Ferguson contributed 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Marist held Kyle Wilson, who entered the game averaging 17.9 points, to eight points on 3-for-15 shooting.
Marist shot a season-best .524 (33-for-63) from the field, including a .552 clip (16-for-29) in the second half. Marist held Army West Point to just 7-for-38 (.184) shooting from three-point range. The Black Knights were just 1-for-17 from deep in the first half.
The game began at a brisk pace, as the Red Foxes scored 15 points – with six different scorers – in the first 4:21 of the game and grabbed a seven-point lead. A three-pointer by Lamb at the 9:09 mark gave Marist its largest lead of 13 at 30-17. Army West Point battled back, and a three-pointer by Cox tied the score at 36 with 2:01 left in the half. But the Red Foxes outscored the Black Knights 6-2 over the final 1:31 of the half, and took a 42-38 lead to the locker room.
With 10:58 remaining, a free throw by Mac Hoffman gave Army West Point its first lead of the game at 56-55. The lead changed hands five more times over the next 2:13. With 5:56 left, Wilson's three-pointer tied the score at 69, but Marist freshman forward Kristinn Palsson answered with a three of his own on the Red Foxes' next possession, which gave the team the lead for good.
Marist closed the game by going 9-for-10 from the free-throw line in the final 1:19. Hart was 6-for-6 in this stretch.
Marist is now 3-6 overall; Army West Point is 8-3. The Red Foxes snapped the Black Knights' five-game winning streak.
Marist will return to action on Tuesday, when the Red Foxes take on Brown in the Hall of Fame Challenge at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game is the font end of a doubleheader, which includes a South Carolina-St. John's contest in the second game.
Notes: Marist has now shot at least 50 percent from the field in four of its nine games this season. … Junior center Kentrall Brooks had a career-high five points, and had two key blocked shots in the final four minutes of the game. … Marist now leads the all-time series, 10-6. Sunday's game marked just the fourth time that the road team prevailed.
