POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - A last minute comeback came up just short for the Red Foxes, as Marist fell to the Hofstra Pride by a final score of 71-67 at McCann Arena on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Red Foxes to 3-8 on the season, while the Pride improve to 8-3.
Senior Sydney Coffey led Marist with 24 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the floor, 2-for-4 from behind the arc and 10-for-15 from the foul line. Sixth year senior Tori Jarosz notched her seventh double-double of the year with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
Darius Faulk led the way for Hofstra with 20 points on 8-for-19 shooting from the floor and 2-for-5 from three point range to go along with five assists and four steals.
The Pride outrebounded Marist 39-31, including an 11-5 advantage on the offensive glass. Hofstra shot .421 from the field and .389 from behind the arc, while the Red Foxes shot .404 from the field and .250 from three point range.
The first half lead would change hands six times, as the Red Foxes largest lead was six with 3:14 left in the first quarter. Hofstra's largest lead was four with 1:57 left in the second. Jarosz led the way for Marist in the half as she totaled 13 points and seven rebounds. Coffey chipped in with nine points of her own on 3-for-4 shooting from the field.
Hofstra used a 20-13 third quarter scoring advantage behind seven points from Kelly Loftus to take a commanding 56-45 lead into the fourth quarter. The Red Foxes shot just 3-for-10 from the field in the third quarter but 6-for-10 from the free throw line to keep the deficit within reach.
A bucket and the foul from Hofstra's Ashunae Durant with 7:58 remaining in the fourth pushed the Hofstra lead to 15, thier largest of the game. However, Marist answered back with a 12-2 run to cut into the deficit and pull the game to within five with 2:20 remaining in the fourth.
An and-one for Jarosz brought the score to 66-64 with 1:16 remaining, but a three pointer by Faulk from the left wing with 45 seconds left sealed the win for the Pride.
