POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Red Foxes collected their first win of the 2015-16 season in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener on Thursday, Dec. 3 with a 56-47 victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats. The defeat marked the first conference loss in the last 21 MAAC games for Quinnipiac, with the previous coming on Feb. 27, 2014 in a 80-72 defeat vs. Iona.
Tori Jarosz led Marist with 16 points and 14 rebounds, good for her fourth double-double in eight games. Allie Clement and Sydney Coffey each chipped in 13 points and five rebounds, as the Red Foxes outscored the Bobcats 28-12 in the paint and outrebounded Quinnipiac 48-37, with 15 on the offensive side of the ball.
Maria Napolitano led the visitors with 13 points on 5 for 15 shooting with three rebounds and two steals, while Katie Carroll contributed six points and six rebounds.
Both teams started hot trading buckets to start the first until a near three minute scoring drought for Marist led to a 7-0 Quinnipiac run. A three from Clement would snap the Bobcats run and pull the score back to 14-12. Clement poured in eight points in the first quarter behind 2-for-3 shooting from deep and the Red Foxes headed to the second quarter trailing Quinnipiac 18-17.
The second quarter failed to start as quickly as the first as both teams locked down on the defensive end and held each other to prolonged scoring droughts. Similar to the first quarter Clement rose to the occasion again, snapping a 0-for-8 scoring drought with another three to knot the game at 23.
While the offense sputtered the defense picked them up holding Quinnipiac to eight points in the quarter to the Red Foxes 14. Marist ended the half on a 6-0 run capped by a big block from Jarosz that found a streaking Coffey and a two shot foul to take a 31-26 lead heading into the half.
Quinnipiac would hit the first three of the half but it would be all Marist from there. The Red Foxes would respond with a 6-0 run to open up a 37-29 lead and then later in the quarter a 7-0 run to end the quarter up by 10. To go along with the Red Foxes offense the defense held Quinnipiac to another single digit scoring quarter including a near five minute scoring drought heading into the fourth.
Despite finishing the game on just 3-for-13 shooting, the Marist defense locked down the visitors even tighter in the final quarter, holding the Bobcats to only 12 points on 5-for-17 shooting, including 1-for-11 in the final 5:29. A late three pointer with seven seconds, brought Quinnipiac within nine points, but it was too little too late, as the final buzzer sounded with the Red Foxes emerging victorious.
Up next Marist heads to Bridgeport, Connecticut to take on preseason poll favorites Fairfield. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
