FAIRFIELD, Connecticut – The Marist women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a 72-57 win over Fairfield, Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall. Tori Jarosz recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 20 points and 14 rebounds and Sydney Coffey poured in 20 points on 7-for-13 shooting to pace the Red Foxes in the victory.
Allie Clement was the Red Foxes third double digit scorer as she had 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting, 4-for-7 from deep, and pulled down five rebounds to go along with four steals.
As a team the Red Foxes finished the game shooting 24-for-49 from the field, 10-for-21 from the three point line, and 14-for-18 from the free throw stripe. After a scorching first quarter for the Stags the Red Foxes defense held Fairfield to 24-for-59 shooting on field goals and 3-for-10 from behind the arc.
Kelsey Carey led Fairfield with 13 points and Samantha Cooper chipped in 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Stags.
The third quarter proved to be the decisive one as the Red Foxes used a 10-2 run to start the half along with a stretch where the team went 9-for-10 from the field including 5-6 from three to push a three point halftime lead to a 21 point lead after three quarters.
Along with the lights out shooting (10-13 FG) the Red Foxes held Fairfield to 2-for-their-last-14 to end the quarter, outscoring the Stags 26-8 in the third to take a commanding 62-41 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Stags would start the game hot, shooting 10-for-13 (.773) from the field on a heavy dose of mid-range jumpers and forays to the hoop. A three from Van Horn halfway through the first quarter would break a 9-0 Fairfield run and cut the early deficit to just four. The Red Foxes finished the first quarter down 23-15 despite shooting under 40 percent from the field.
A 10-0 run to start the second quarter punctuated by Rebecka Garderyd's first career three and a long jumper from Jarosz regained the lead for Marist at 25-23 with 6:35 remaining in the half. The Stags would tie the lead but never regain it as Marist would head into the locker room leading 36-33 after outscoring Fairfield 21-10 in the quarter.
Coffey's relentless takes to the hoop gave her 14 points in the first half on 5-for-10 shooting from the field. Jarosz finished the half with 10 points and seven rebounds, well on her way to her fifth double-double in nine games.
The Red Foxes return to non-conference action on Saturday, December 12th when they travel to take on Boston University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. Following the game against BU the Red Foxes will face Hofstra and Princeton before returning to conference action against Rider in January.
