BUFFALO – Behind a career-high 35 points from senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.), the Marist men's basketball team defeated Canisius by a score of 75-67 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday. The win enabled Marist to complete a sweep of Niagara and Canisius in western New York for the first time in the program's 18 years in the MAAC.
Lewis shot 14-for-16 from the field, and also recorded six rebounds and three assists. Red-shirt sophomore guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) had 13 points, four rebounds and two assists. Junior center Eric Truog (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) taillied eight points, five rebounds and five assists.
Zach Lewis, who hit four three-pointers, led Canisius in scoring with 19 points. Jermaine Crumpton followed with 18. Josiah Heath had a game-high 17 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end.
Marist controlled the contest for most of the way. The Red Foxes led for 35:34 of the contest. There were three lead changes and three ties in the game, but all occurred in the first 9:19. A dunk by junior forward Phillip Lawrence (Baltimore, Md.) with 10:41 left in the first half gave Marist a 20-18 lead, and the Red Foxes never surrendered the lead the rest of the way. Marist led by as much as seven in the first 20 minutes, and took a 41-35 advantage to the locker room. The Red Foxes shot 17-for-29 (.586) from the field and .462 (6-for-13) from three-point range in the first half.
Marist led by as much as 13 in the second half. Canisius came as close as five with 1:25 remaining, but drew no closer. The Red Foxes shot .471 (8-for-17) from the field in the second half. Although Marist did not hit a three-pointer in seven attempts in the final 20 minutes, the Red Foxes hit 18 free throws in 27 attempts.
The Red Foxes had just seven turnovers, and recorded 18 assists on 25 made baskets. Although Canisius had 28 offensive rebounds, and outrebounded Marist 53-29, the Red Foxes held the Golden Griffins to a .307 (23-for-75) field-goal percentage.
Marist won its third straight. The Red Foxes are now 4-18 overall and 3-9 in the MAAC. Canisius fell to 12-9 overall and 7-5 in the MAAC.
Marist returns to action on Friday against Niagara at McCann Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. It will be the second meeting in eight days between the teams, as the Red Foxes defeated the Purple Eagles 65-61 on Friday, Jan. 30.
