Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The #20 Marist water polo team (2-1, 0-0) earned a victory in its first home game of the season, as the Red Foxes posted a 14-6 win over Brown University (0-1, 0-0). Marist had nine different individuals score goals in an impressive win at home.
The Red Foxes fell behind early giving up the first goal of the game, but quickly answered and never looked back. "They did exactly what I hoped they would do, what I asked them to do. Come out strong and play a complete four quarters, and put them on their backs early." said head coach Natalie Benson. Marist ended the first quarter up 5-1 on two goals from sophomore Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC), and one goal each from redshirt junior Ellie Hoffman (Pasadena, Calif.), freshman Diana Carballo (Mexico City, Mexico), senior Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.). The scoring continued in the second quarter with goals coming from five different individuals. Senior Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif,) sophomore Jocelyn McQuade (Vancouver, BC), Ellie Hoffman, and senior captains Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) and Anna-Lena Hathaway (Pasadena, Calif.)Â each tallied a goal to give the Red Foxes a 10-3 lead heading into halftime.
In the third quarter Amanda Amorosa grabbed her third and fourth goals of the day, and Levien her second goal to give Marist a 13-5 lead heading into the final period of play. Â The fourth quarter only saw one more goal as junior captain Brooke Else grabbed her first goal of the year making the final score 14-6.
Alison Hamby lead the Red Foxes with four assists, while senior Jamison Mahar (Riverside, Calif.), Jocelyn McQuade, and Hannah Levien each contributed two assists. Diana Carballo and Jessica Hamby led the team in steals with two apiece.
Goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) made 11 saves while giving up just five goals against. She also had three steals, and assisted on two goals. Freshman goalie Jessica Hermosillo (La Mirada, Calif.) saw her first action as a Red Fox and came in for Henry midway through the fourth quarter making one save with one goal against.
Marist had six 6-on-5 opportunities, but only managed to capitalize on one in the first, and second quarters of play.
Next weekend the Red Foxes head to the UC-San Diego Triton Invite where they will play the host UCSD (2-2, 0-0) in the first game of the tournament at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7.
