POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team (16-9, 12-4 MAAC) suffered a 70-65 loss to Niagara (12-13, 8-8 MAAC) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at McCann Arena on Saturday night.
Red-shirt senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) led all scorers with 20 points. It was Jarosz's fifth consecutive game with at least 20 points. Jarosz set a career high for free throws made, as she hit all 10 of her attempts from the line. Junior guard/forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) and freshman guard Allie Clement (Falmouth, Maine) gave the Red Foxes three double-digit scorers with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Niagara used an 11-2 run spanning from the 9:56 minute mark to 6:43 to expand a 53-52 lead to a 64-54 deficit for the Red Foxes. The 10 point lead was the Purple Eagles largest of the game. Two free throws from Jarosz with 49 seconds remaining would be the closest the Red Foxes would get to the Purple Eagles lead. There were no field goals in the final three minutes and 48 seconds.
After a three point lead just five minutes into the first half, the Red Foxes never led again as the Purple Eagles controlled much of the first half outscoring Marist in the paint 14-3 and 11-2 in second chance points. The Purple Eagles led at halftime 33-31 and the Red Foxes are now 2-9 when trailing at halftime.
The win for the Purple Eagles gave Niagara their first victory at McCann since Jan. 21, 2001 when they beat Marist, 63-61. The loss for the Red Foxes marks the first time since the 2004-05 season in which the team has lost consecutive MAAC games and the first time since 2002-03 that Marist was defeated twice in a row at home.
Niagara featured a balanced scoring attack. Four Purple Eagles scored in double digits, led by Kelly Van Leeuwen, Taylor McKay and Victoria Rampado with 12 points apiece. McKay led the Purple Eagles with seven rebounds. Niagara held a 15-2 advantage in second-chance points overall.
Marist returns to action on Friday, Feb. 20, when the Red Foxes host Iona. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. The contest will be broadcast on ESPNU. Prior to the game, Marist will hold its Senior Day ceremony.
