WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 69-65 loss at Monmouth in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Monday night.
Marist red-shirt sophomore guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) led all scorers with 21 points. Senior guard/forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a season-high 16 off the bench. Senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) had 15 points and four rebounds while leading the team with three assists and three blocked shots, and tying for the team best with three steals.
Monmouth's Justin Robinson scored a team-high 20 points. All 20 came in the second half. Deon Jones added 18.
Marist led for 31:04 of the contest. With 4:44 left in the first half, a layup by Lewis gave Marist a 22-21 advantage, and started the Red Foxes on a 10-3 run for the remainder of the half, as Marist led 30-24 after the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, Lewis scored six consecutive points in a span of 1:46 to give Marist its largest lead of 10 at 36-26 with 17:22 to play. Thomas converted all three free throws on a three-shot foul with 7:23 left to give Marist a 54-46 lead. Monmouth answered with a 7-0 run over the next 2:41 to cut the Red Foxes' lead to one.
With 3:35 to play, Monmouth's Zac Tillman drained two free throws to tie the score at 58 apiece. On Monmouth's next possession, Robinson's three with 2:50 left gave the Hawks the lead for good.
Marist fell to 5-21 overall and 4-12 in the MAAC. Monmouth improved to 15-12 overall and 11-5 in conference play.
Marist will return to action on Friday, when the Red Foxes host Iona. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m.
The contest will air on ESPNU, and is the back end of a doubleheader with the Marist women's team, which will face Iona at 5 p.m., also on ESPNU. Separate admission is required for reach game.
