POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist water polo team (5-6) upset No. 20 Hartwick (6-10, 2-0) in McCann Natatorium Sunday afternoon with a final score of 10-3.
Senior captain Hannah Levien (Davis, Calif.) led the Red Foxes with a season-high three goals and two assists. Senior Alison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) added two goals, had two field blocks and one steal. Senior captain Anna-Lena Hathaway (Pasadena, Calif.) scored two goals, had two assists and two steals.
Sophomore Nastasia McGlothlin (Mission Viejo, Calif.) added one goal and had one steal. Sophomore Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC) scored a goal on a penalty shot, and had two assists. Senior Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) found the back of the net once, had two assists and two steals.
Junior goalie Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) had an incredible game, making a season-high 18 saves while giving up just three goals against. Henry also had one takeaway.
“She had a much better game today then she had previously against Hartwick. She really did a great job getting her hands on some balls,” said head coach Natalie Benson. “Overall our defense in general was fantastic.”
The Red Fox defense held Hartwick to 0-for-13 on their man advantage, while Marist went 3-for-7 on its six-on-five opportunities.
After a shutout by the Red Foxes defense, and goals by Hathaway and Levien in the first quarter, Marist went into the second quarter with a 2-0 lead. The Red Foxes had its most productive quarter of offense in the second, finding the back of the net four times. A. Hamby and Levien each picked up two goals in the second quarter to five Marist a 6-1 lead at halftime.
The Red Foxes didn't slow down coming out of halftime. J. Hamby, Hathaway, and McGlothlin each picked up a goal in the third quarter to extend the Marist lead to 9-1. After a penalty shot was called, Amorosa didn't waste the opportunity and scored the only goal for the Red Foxes in the final quarter of play ending the game with a score of 10-3.
Marist returns to action the weekend of March 7-8 when it heads to Cambridge, Mass. to participate in the Harvard Invitational. The Red Foxes will play four games throughout the weekend against Princeton on Saturday at 10:15 a.m., and Harvard that evening at 6:45 p.m. On Sunday, Marist will face Brown at 9:15 a.m., and San Jose State later that afternoon at 1 p.m.
