POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's basketball fell to Manhattan, 67-54, in the second of a three-game home stand.?
Senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with 16 points. He tied for the team lead with four assists and swiped four steals.
Junior Phillip Lawrence (Baltimore, Md.) finished two rebounds shy of a double-double, snatching eight to go along with his 11 points. The third Marist player to finish with double digit points was sophomore Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.). He scored 12, going 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He added six rebounds and four assists to his stat line. ?
Jermaine Lawrence led all scorers with 19 points alongside six rebounds and one block for the Jaspers. Lawrence led four Manhattan scorers in double digits. Emmy Andujar contributed 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Ashton Pankey and RaShawn Stores scored 10 points apiece.
Manhattan scored the game's first seven points, but Marist answered with an 8-0 run and tied the game at nine apiece with 15:11 left in the first half. The Red Foxes later went on an 11-1 run to grab an eight-point lead with 3:07 left in the half, and took a 31-27 lead to the locker room.
A three-pointer by senior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) gave Marist its largest lead of nine, at 36-27, with 18:55 to go. However, Manhattan immediately answered with a 7-0 run. With 12:08 to play, a jumper by Lawrence gave Manhattan a 43-42 lead, and the Jaspers maintained the advantage the rest of the way. The final margin of 13 was Manhattan's largest of the game, but the Red Foxes did not cut their deficit into single digits in the last three minutes.
Manhattan was held to .320 (8-for-25) shooting from the field in the first half and missed all eight of its three-point attempts. In the second half, the Jaspers shot .650 (13-for-20) from the field, and .500 (3-for-6) from three-point range.
Marist shot just .345 (19-for-55) from the field, .190 (4-for-21) from three-point range and .545 (12-for-22) from the free-throw line.
The Red Foxes will close out the home stand, and the home schedule for the 2014-15 season, against Saint Peter's at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27. Prior to the game, Marist will honor its senior class of Lewis, Curry, guard/forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and guard Tourron Whitfield (Queens, N.Y.).
