FAIRFIELD, CONN. – Junior forward Madeline Blais did all of her damage in the second half, scoring 24 points, as the Marist women's basketball team (18-9, 14-4 MAAC) came from behind to defeat the Fairfield Stags (12-15, 11-7 MAAC), 56-50, Monday night at Alumni Hall in Bridgeport, Conn.
Trailing by as many as 17 points in the second half, Blais and the Red Foxes blitzed the Stags with some hot shooting and timely defense. Blais, who was 0-for-3 in the first half, exploded with an impressive shooting display mixed in with some slashing and forays to the hoop. Blais missed only one shot in the second half going 9-for-10 from the field and 5-for-6 from deep in the 20 minute stanza.
It wasn't just all Blais though, senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) also had a huge game for the Red Foxes, scoring 17 points, blocking four shots, and pulling down a career high 15 rebounds, besting her previous career high mark by one. The big second half for both players was sorely needed as the Red Foxes offense was held to just 10 points in the first half.
The 10 point first half was the lowest first half output this season since the Red Foxes scored 19 points on the road against the Quinnipiac Bobcats and lowest in a half since the 1999-2000 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament when the team scored nine against the Manhattan Jaspers.
The lone bright spot in a half full of misses was eight rebounds from Jarosz, who also added three points on 1-for-3 shooting. Other scorers for the Red Foxes in the first half included sophomore Brittni Lai (Irvington N.Y.), who finally got Marist on the board close to eight minutes into the game with a driving layup, and sophomore forward Katharine Fogarty (Peterborough, N.H.). Lai finished the half with four points while Fogarty had three points.
As a team the Red Foxes finished the half 4-for-23 (.174) from the field, 1-for-10 (.100) from behind the arc and turned the ball over seven times. The Stags shot better but not by much, converting on 9-for-31 from the field, 2-for-5 from deep and tallied four turnovers. Fairfield did capitalize on their defensive efforts though, turning the seven Red Fox turnovers into 10 points.
The second half was a different story as the Red Foxes poured in 46 second half points behind 15-for-27 (.556) shooting from the field, 5-for-8 (.625) from deep, and converted on 11 of their 12 trips to the stripe. Jarosz and Blais would combine for 38 of the Red Foxes 46 points in the half.
With the win the Red Foxes have locked up the number two seed in the MAAC and will play on Friday, Mar. 6 at 7 P.M. Opponent to be determined on Thursday.
Up next the Red Foxes play their second of their final three games of the season on the road as they take on Saint Peter's Thursday, Feb. 26. Tip-off is set for 7 P.M. in Jersey City.
