NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Behind another double-double effort from senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), who tallied a career high 23 points and 11 rebounds, the Marist women's basketball team prevailed over the Niagara Purple Eagles, 75-66, at the Gallagher Center Thursday night. The win also marked head coach Brian Giorgis' 200th career Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory, achieving the mark in just 231 tries.
Cool free throw shooting from junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) and sophomore guard Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) iced the game for the Red Foxes as the duo combined for 8-for-8 from the free throw stripe in the final two minutes. As a team the Red Foxes scored all of their final points off free throws in the final two minutes as the team went 11-for-12 from the line to close out the game.
Blais would finish the game with 12 points and four rebounds while Lai would notch nine points, four rebounds and a steal in 24 minutes of action.
A big three pointer from sophomore forward Katharine Fogarty (Peterborough, N.H.) with 11:39 remaining gave the Red Foxes a 54-46 lead after Niagara had cut it to five on the previous possession. The shot sparked an 11-2 run that expanded the lead to 62-48 with 7:20 remaining. The Purple Eagles would continue to rally back cutting into the Red Foxes lead throughout the final seven minutes but the run that spanned the middle of the half would be enough for the Red Foxes to start the first half of the Buffalo swing at 1-0.
The Red Foxes jumped out to a hot shooting first half behind a highly efficient offense as the team shot 16-for-30 (.530) from the field and 6-for-12 (.500) from deep. The Red Foxes highest lead of the first half came at the 3:18 mark when they led 35-15. A 15-6 Purple Eagle run closed out a first half that was mostly dominated by the Red Foxes.
