BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) recorded her eighth double-double of the season, with 22 points and 12 rebounds, as the Marist women's basketball team (16-7, 12-2) defeated the Canisius Golden Griffins, 63-49, Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Center.
Jarosz, the only player on the Red Foxes in double digits, finished 8-for-15 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line while adding an assist in only 21 minutes of action. Early foul trouble for both junior forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.), who finished with nine points, three rebounds and two blocks, and Jarosz in the second half led to some more minutes and production from the bench mob.
The bench responded with 16 points, six for sophomore Katharine Fogarty (Peterborough, N.H.) and eight for sophomore guard Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.). Fogarty also grabbed nine rebounds while Lai snatched five rebounds and dished out three assists.
Other key scorers for the Red Foxes included junior guard Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) and freshman guard Allie Clement (Falmouth, Maine). Coffey, who left in the second half at around the 12 minute mark with an ankle injury, finished with eight points and three assists. Coffey had her ankle rewrapped and was warming up on the sideline but wasn't needed to come back in and finish because of the Red Foxes lead. Clement, on an array of nice drives and pull-up jumpers, scored eight points, grabbed two rebounds, had an assist, a block and a steal.
After a back and forth first 10 minutes the Red Foxes went on a 13-3 run spanning from the 10 minute mark to the last media timeout, expanding the lead from 16-15 to 29-18. Jarosz paced the Red Foxes in the first half with 10 points and four rebounds, Blais scored nine points and grabbed three rebounds and Fogarty came off the bench to record four points and seven rebounds in the half.
The Red Foxes shot 11-for-27 (.407) from the field in the first half and outrebounded the Griffins 24-13 while holding Canisius to 7-for-25 (.280) from the floor. For the game the Red Foxes finished at 21-for-53 (.396) from the field but only hit one three pointer in 10 attempts. The Griffins finished at 19-for-55 (.345) and only converted on two of their 13 attempts from deep.
Up next the Red Foxes return home to take on Quinnipiac for the second time this year on Thursday, Feb. 12. Tip-off is set for 5 P.M. Last time against the MAAC league leading Bobcats the Red Foxes lost their second league game of the season, 73-55. Quinnipiac is currently undefeated in MAAC play and 20-3 overall.
NOTES: The Red Foxes have swept the Buffalo trip for the fifth consecutive year ... the team is also now 14-0 when leading at halftime and are 10-2 when committing fewer turnovers than the opposition ... The team now moves to 4-6 when less than three players score in double-digits ... Jarosz has two double-doubles in a row, two away from her most consecutive which she set during a torrid stretch in the month of January.
