ALBANY, N.Y. ? The second-seeded Marist women's basketball team suffered a 72-61 loss to top-seeded Quinnipiac in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship game at the Times Union Center on Monday.
Marist was led in scoring by junior guard/forward Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.), who had 21 points. Red-shirt senior center Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) finished with 16 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.
The Red Foxes had four double-digit scorers in the game. In addition to Coffey and Jarosz, junior guard/forward Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) finished with 14 points, and freshman guard Allie Clement (Falmouth, Maine) scored 10.
Jasmine Martin led Quinnipiac with 18 points. Nikoline Ostergaard added 15 points thanks to 7-for-8 free-throw shooting. Val Driscoll contributed six points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Although Quinnipiac led for 34:58, there were four lead changes and five ties in the game. The Bobcats scored the game's first seven points, which occurred in the first 1:46 of the contest. However, a 9-1 Marist lead, punctuated by a Blais basket, gave Marist its first lead at 11-10 at the 15:23 mark.
With 17 seconds left in the first half, a pair of free throws by Coffey tied the score at 30 apiece, but a three-pointer by Sarah Shewan in the waning seconds gave Quinnipiac a 33-30 lead. Senior guard Natalie Gomez-Martinez (Andover, Mass.) then drained a half-court shot, but it was ruled to have come just after the buzzer, so the Bobcats maintained a three-point lead after the first 20 minutes.
Quinnipiac started the second half on a 6-1 spurt in the first 1:01, but a basket by Jarosz, followed by three-pointers by Coffey on back-to-back possessions, tied the score at 39 apiece. Ostergaard and Jarosz then traded buckets to tie the score again with 16:31 to play, but a layup by Driscoll nine seconds later gave Quinnipiac the lead for good. Quinnipiac grew its lead to as large as 16, and the Red Foxes never got closer than within nine in the final five minutes.
Marist shot .362 (21-for-58) from the field, .350 (7-for-20) from three-point range and .545 (12-for-22) from the free-throw line. Quinnipiac shot .404 (23-for-57) from the field, .438 (7-for-16) from three-point range and .792 (19-for-24) from the free-throw line. ??
The Red Foxes had three representatives on the MAAC All-Tournament Team: Blais, Coffey and Jarosz.?
By virtue of Marist being the conference's highest finisher not selected to the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship, the Red Foxes have earned an automatic berth to the Postseason National Invitation Tournament. The tournament consists of 64 teams, with first-round play scheduled from March 18-20. The tournament bracket and locations will be unveiled the night on Monday, March 16. All WNIT games will be held at campus sites.
