Box Score RADFORD, VA. – The Marist baseball team (1-6) defeated Radford (7-9) 2-1 on Friday afternoon to secure the Red Foxes first win of the 2015 season.
Sophomore right fielder Tyler Kirkpatrick (Eagleville, Pa.) was 1-for-4 with 1 RBI. Senior catcher Mark Brennan (Wallingford, Conn.) drove in the only other run for the Red Foxes and was 1-for-3 at the plate. Junior designated hitter Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) went 1-for-4 with one run scored. Senior first basemen Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.) scored the other run for Marist and was 1-for-4 in the batter's box.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Charlie Jerla (Philadelphia, Pa.) pitched a scoreless inning of relief striking out two batters and giving up one hit. Senior right-handed pitcher Chris Napolitano (Wall, N.J.) threw a scoreless and hitless 1.1 innings of relief while striking out one batter. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ryan Thomas (Ringoes, N.J.) secured the save for the Red Foxes throwing a scoreless and hitless inning of relief with one strikeout.
In a low scoring game Marist was the first to get on the board. In the fourth inning Brennan singled to left field driving in Laurino for the first run of the game. The Red Foxes would extend their lead in the fifth inning when Kirkpatrick singled to left field allowing Pagano to score the second, and what turned out to be the game-winning, run of the game. Radford got its only run of the game in the sixth inning when Chris Coia grounded out to second base allowing Hrbek to score. Hrbek got to first base when he was hit by a pitch, then advanced to second off a wild pitch.
Senior right-handed pitcher Evan Davis (Little Falls, N.Y.) (1-2), who pitched 5.2 innings, picked up the win for Marist. Davis gave up eight hits with one earned run and four strikeouts. Michael Boyle (2-2) pitched 6.0 innings in the loss for Radford giving up five hits and two earned runs.
The Red Foxes return to action Saturday, March 14 for the second of a three-game series with Radford. First pitch has been moved up to noon.
