Marist Baseball Falls In Game Two At Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Marist baseball team was defeated 13-4 at Furman in the second game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon.

Junior center fielder Graham McIntire (Concord, N.H.) went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored. Junior shortstop John Brucker (Sparta, N.J.) was 1-for-4 with one RBI. Senior first basemen Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.) went 1-for-4 with one run scored. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ryan Thomas (Ringoes, N.J.) pitched one scoreless inning of relief for the Red Foxes striking out one batter.

Furman got on the board first scoring a run in the first inning. Two runs in the second, followed by six runs in the third put the Red Foxes down 9-0 headed into the fourth inning. Brucker was able to get Marist on the board after an infield hit that resulted in a fielder's choice allowing McIntire to reach home making the score 9-1.

Furman answered with three more runs in the fifth inning to extend its lead to 12-1. In the sixth inning senior catcher Mark Swertfager (Katonah, N.Y.) singled to right center allowing Laurino to score the Red Foxes second run of the game. A double from McIntire down the leftfield line in the seventh inning allowed junior third basemen Joey Aiola (Suffern, N.Y.) to score the third run of the game, bringing the score to 12-3. Furman would add another run to their total in the bottom of the seventh inning extending its lead to 13-3. Another RBI double from McIntire in the ninth inning would drive in the final run for the Red Foxes bringing the final score to 13-4.

Ryan Morse (1-3), who pitched the first five innings, grabbed the win for Furman. Senior left-hander Rich Vrana (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) pitched 2.1 innings in the loss for the Red Foxes. Vrana struck out two batters.

Marist and Furman will play their series finale on Sunday, March 8 with game time scheduled for 1 p.m.
