ALBANY, N.Y. - The 11th-seeded Marist men's basketball team (7-25) was defeated by #3 Manhattan (19-14), 74-58, in the quarterfinal round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday night.
Senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) finished with a team-high 22 points, had seven rebounds and three steals. Sophomore guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) added nine points for the Red foxes, had three rebounds and two assists.
Senior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored eight points, had three steals and three rebounds. Senior Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed seven points was 1-for-1 from the field and 4-for-5 form the free throw line.
Emmy Andujar led Manhattan with 24 points and ten rebounds. Shane Richards added 18 points for the Jaspers, and Ashton Pankey scored 16 points.
The Jaspers took a 17 point lead, 47-30, with just under 14 minutes remaining, their second largest lead of the game until an 18 point lead with two minutes left. The Red Foxes were able to chip into the 17 point deficit throughout the remainder of the game but could never cut the Jaspers lead to less than 11.
A 14-4 run from the Red Foxes spanning from before the first media timeout until 13:31 remaining in the first half gave the Red Foxes a 16-11 first half lead. Manhattan would then respond with a run of their own forcing a five minute Marist scoring drought as the Jaspers went on a 12-0 run to take a 23-16 lead at the 8:13 minute mark.
Four Manhattan free throws after a personal foul and technical foul led to the Jaspers turning that 12-0 run into a 19-2 run and taking a 30-18 lead with just over six minutes remaining.
Overall the Red Foxes missed their last 13 field goal attempts of the half and headed into the locker room trailing the Jaspers, 38-22.
The Marist men's basketball team finished the season with an overall record of 7-25. This was the final game for the 2015 senior class of Chavaughn Lewis, Manny Thomas, T.J. Curry and Tourron Whitfield (Queens, N.Y.)
