POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK – The Marist women's tennis team picked up a big win against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Siena, 4-3, Thursday afternoon at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion.
The Red Foxes started off strong in doubles taking the first two matches and securing the day's first point. Junior Karly Pang (Keneohe, Hawaii) and freshman Claire Schmitz (Scotia, N.Y.) teamed up to take down Siena's pairing of Ali Garrity and Mitsuki Fukamachi, 8-4.
Junior Nikki Rohan (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and freshman Elizabeth Brozovich (Port Huron, Mich.) defeated the Saint's Jessica Macaluso and Cassandra Braz, 8-1 to give the Red Foxes an early 1-0 advantage.
The singles matches were tight throughout with both teams splitting four singles matches before the overall match clincher from sophomore Callie Morlock (Golden, Colo.). Morlock took down Macaluso, 6-2, 7-6(7-2) to give the Red Foxes a much needed win in conference play.
Pang and Brozovich were the other Red Foxes who earned singles points for the team in an overall impressive outing. With the win the Red Foxes improve to 2-1 in conference action.
“Overall I thought we played really well, it's a great feeling to come out on top and it was an important win for us,” head coach Jason Sacher said. “I was particularly impressed with the freshman, Claire really stepped up and rose to the occasion in doubles and Lizzy came through in her singles match. We need to use this momentum to propel us going forward.”
The Red Foxes return to action at home against MAAC foe Manhattan on Tuesday, April 7 at 4 P.M.
